proto-type

Following in the footsteps of last week's maker market I have another event to tickle your fancy: Paul Owen (Owen Architecture) + Dan Pike have come together to create proto-type, an 'independent experiment to discover a viable way to make / sell work within Brisbane / Queensland.'

The official blurb sums up the concept perfectly; 'proto-type is an event, where locally designed + made, affordable furniture + small-run publishing is available for sale over a weekend. It is a micro-industry of local design / making / selling / self-making / self-publishing.'

I am genuinely excited to discover this collection of products that is so clearly informed by the environment in which they were conceived. The robes + suit horse make perfect sense within the context of a typical, wardrobe-less, 'Queenslander' home whilst the Floodmarker tea towel tells a story unique to Brisbane. I also have to admit, as a renter with too much art for the pre-existing hooks in my home, the leaning easel holds a lot of appeal!

I asked Paul how the concept for the even came about + how long it took to bring to fruition, 'Dan + I have been working this for about eighteen months. At Owen and Vokes and Peters we've always designed furniture pieces as part of a commission process - a few years ago it occurred to me it would be fun to make some of this work available to the public in a weekend-sausage-sizzle context. At a talk given in our office, Dan spoke about his Capital P. side-project - a small run printing / publishing venture. It occurred to me we had similar ideas + we should get together + make the proto-type thing happen.'

Some of the printed pieces are available online via Capital P.'s online store however, in the first instance, the furniture will be available only at the event. 'This enables us to get on with our core-work at Owen and Vokes and Peters + The Letter D - without having to manage a second business! The idea is an experiment at this stage so we'll see what happens,' says Paul.

Do pop in + check it all out for yourself at one of the two events happening this weekend (or both if you're really keen).
