Gypset
Stylist Christie Nicolaides' pop up store Gypset opens its doors on James Street this Friday + after a fair bit of Insta-teasing I have to say I'm excited! I was lucky enough to be able to take a little bit of a sneak peek at the collection + get the lowdown on what it's all about...
A collection of gold dipped, semi-precious stone rings from Turkey.
Gold dipped, semi-precious stone earrings from Turkey.
A silver 'galloping horse' pendant from Tibet.
Gypset is your first pop up store, how did it all come about?
I've always been interested in jewellery from around the world + particularly from ethnic cultures. As a stylist I've always sourced unique, interesting pieces from abroad + my clients + friends often ask me how they can buy them. The idea of the pop up store was a way to share my passion with these women.
You've curated a fantastic mix of vintage, one-off pieces + artisan product made especially for Gypset, how did you go about sourcing them?
I have always collected jewellery. This interest in fine + costume jewellery began at a young age - my mother + grandmother have kept every piece of jewellery they've ever bought. It wasn't difficult for me to source the pieces for the store as I have been doing it for my personal enjoyment for many years. A recent trip to Turkey was the inspiration for Gypset + I collaborated with many artisans to create the collection.
Tell us a little bit about one of your favourite pieces from the collection? What would you wear it with?
One of my favourite pieces is a sterling silver 'galloping horse' pendant. It is handcrafted with large inlaid turquoise stone (pictured above). It is a beautiful piece that could be worn with the most simple or elaborate outfit.
Gypset is really an offshoot of your styling work, what's next for you?
Gypset is really the start from me. I hope to continue to travel to exotic locations + source for future pop up stores. Morocco is next on my list.
Finally, which creatives are inspiring you at the moment?
It is no secret that I have a strong affiliation with Easton Pearson. Pam + Lydia have an incredible knack with print, texture and embellishment + combining unlikely colours. They are always an inspiration to me.
